Beginnings

In an effort to support touring artists playing new, tropical music creations, in 2011 Mafe and rAt founded Maracuyeah – a project cultivating DC events that remix and criss-cross cultures, with a mixtape-style Pan-Latin-to-the-Future sound that shakes crowds, and mixes in traditional & popular tropical rhythms they grew up with.

Djs

In the beginning years of the collective dj bent was a resident DJ, and in 2014, Carmencha joined as DJ and DC organizer. Mafe now djs in Paris.

Mafe, rAt and Carmencha are also djs who have toured the US and Latin American, sharing their Maracuyeah sounds. They have shared the stage with names such as Bomba Estereo, Calle 13, Lido Pimienta and Kumbia Queers among many others. Their sets feature everything from cumbiaton, vintage chicha recordings, synth & rock en español, salsa remixes + tropical booty bangers.

Organizing style

Maracuyeah focuses on local and transnational independent artists, specifically focusing on femme, woman, poc, immigrant and queer-identified artists. It also chooses to organize its parties in safer community spaces that adhere to the values of respect, justice, equality and love. Maracuyeah has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR,  and other media outlets because of its work opening spaces for alternative Latinx folks in the US.

Maracuyeah collective

The collective is composed of collaborators who have taken the roles of djs, graphic designers, safety teams, photographers and party coordinators among many others. Some frequent DC collaborators past and present are: dj bent, Underdog, dj Yeko, Slammer, Inda Nile, Natty Boom, Adriana Lucia Coates, Salem, Maria Alejandra, Judy’s Restaurant, Anthology of Booty crew, Pam, Nico, Antonio Hernandez, La Yorona, Kryptk, Jaime Flores, Cami Lopez, Chelsea Jones,  Sara Vasquez, Brenda Luzz, Alexander Smith, Daniela Aramayo, La SalvadoReina  dj Wanako, Carlos Jimenez, Rosario Garcia, Efrain Ramirez, and Fori Fisher.

Que es Maracuyeah?

Eyyy! Maracuyeah nació en 2011 para celebrar, cultivar y a veces remezclar culturas latinas africanas y caribeñas en DC! Fiestas… musica y musicos internacionales y locales… djs y ambiente, creando comunidad contigo. Chequea los eventos q estamos haciendo y ven a bailar y a participar!

Djs

Maracuyeah es un proyecto fundado por Mafe y Rat.  Ellas también actúan como djs las cuales ha visitando ciudades en USA y Latinoamérica compartiendo su sonido particular. Ellas han compartido el escenario con artistas de talla como Bomba Estereo, Calle 13, Lido Pimienta y Kumbia Queers entre otros. Sus sets incluyen chicha peruana, salsaton, cumbia remezclada, perreo y joyas tropicales.

En los primeros años del colectivo, dj bent apoyó bastante en las fiestas.  En 2014 Carmencha se unio al colectivo como DJ y organizadora de las fiestas en DC. Mafe vive en Paris.

Estilo organizativo

Maracuyeah se enorgullece de apoyar artistas independientes- locales y transnacionales. Trata de construir una plataforma e espacio que centra a nenas, a las personas queer, a inmigrantes, a personas de colores, y a mujeres También decide organizar sus fiestas en espacios culturales los cuales se apeguen a los valores de respeto, justicia, igualdad y amor. Maracuyeah ha sido destacada en medios de comunicación internacionales como el Washington Post, NPR y Fusion TV por el trabajo hecho para abrir espacios dedicados a latinxs alternativxs en USA.

El colectivo Maracuyeah
